Was thrilled get a copy of this several months ago and stated in that post that due to its condition, was still on the lookout for a cleaner copy...today it happened.

Here we have both Brunswicks recorded in New Orleans by Monk Hazel and His Beinville Roof Orchestra in the order they were waxed.

For two years now, I've been outbid on several auctions for this Crescent City record...finally able to bring it home this week.

This completes my run of four sides recorded for Brunswick under Monk Hazel's name.

John Hyman's Bayou Stompers - Victor 20593 (1927)

Been after this New Orleans recorded 78 for a long time.

Gonna keep looking for a better player, but for now, couldn't be happier to finally have it in the NOLA collection.

Johnny Wiggs (July 25, 1899 - October 10, 1977) was a jazz musician and band leader.

Born John Wigginton Hyman in New Orleans, Louisiana, he started his music career on the violin. He soon adopted the cornet and moved to New York for some time before returning to New Orleans. His main stylistic influences were Joe "King" Oliver (who Wiggs insisted did his best work in New Orleans in the years before he moved up North and was recorded) and Bix Beiderbecke.

In the late 1920s he took a job as a teacher in Louisiana and moonlighted in New Orleans jazz clubs at night. He made his first recordings as "John Hyman's Bayou Stompers" in the late 1920s.

In the 1940s he again became a full time musician, leading several bands and laying down a good number of tracks. He took on the nickname "Johnny Wiggs" for his musical work as jazz was still looked down on in some circles. He became an important figure in the local traditional jazz revival. In the 1960s he returned to performing part time only, though he remained active until the 1970s. He was a mentor to such younger musicians as George Finola.

Along the way he helped found the New Orleans Jazz Club and was a force behind the jazz revival in the 1940s. Pete Fountain is one of his more famous pupils.

Monk Hazel & His Bienville Roof Orchestra - Brunswick 4182 (1928)

Monk Hazel (a.k.a. Arthur Hazel, August 15, 1903, Harvey, Louisiana - March 5, 1968, New Orleans. Louisiana) was a jazz drummer.

In addition to being a well regarded drummer, Hazel occasionally took solos on brass instruments, notably cornet and melophone. Monk Hazel was a fixture on the New Orleans music scene for decades. Hazel's father was a drummer as well. Early on Monk played drums with Emmett Hardy, who gave him his first cornet, and then with Stalebread Lacombe.

In the 1920s, Hazel worked with many bands including those led by Abbie Brunies (the Halfway House Orchestra), Tony Parenti (with whom he recorded in 1925) and Johnny Wiggs. He led his own Bienville Roof Orchestra (which played for atop the Bienville Hotel at Lee Circle, and made recordings in 1928) and then spent time in New York playing with Johnny Wiggs, Jack Pettis and with his own group (1929–31).

Hazel was in Hollywood for a period (working with Gene Austin) but eventually came back to New Orleans, performing with Joe Caprano (1937) and the Lloyd Danton Quintet. Hazel spent 1942-43 in the Army and then worked for a time outside of music. However during his final 20 years, Hazel was once again quite active in New Orleans, performing with Sharkey Bonano, George Girard, Mike Lala, Santo Pecora and virtually every other important name in New Orleans jazz.

As a leader, Monk Hazel recorded four titles in 1928 for Brunswick Records and a full album for Southland Records in 1954; Pete Fountain and Al Hirt were among his sidemen on the latter recording.

Sharkey's Dixieland Band - New Orleans Bandwagon RWP-5/6 (1951?)

Roger Wolfe was a New Orleans DJ that recorded groups on his own label New Orleans Bandwagon. 
I believe that this disc was recorded in 1951. (every Sharkey track on this label that I am finding on the net, when the date is listed, is saying 1951)
