Dixie Jazz Band - Oriole 1668 (1929)

Took a chance on this one considering the band's name and the composers' credits. Turns out this is an Irving Mills' group.

A little worn down (the flip...a Reser outfit, I think...is unplayable) but the price was right. Not sure how many sides there are with Big T on trumpet (wasn't even aware he played one).

Jimmy McPartland c / ? Tommy Gott t / Jack Teagarden t, tb, v / Jimmy Dorsey, Gil Rodin cl, as / Bud Freeman, Pee Wee Russell cl, ts / Vic Breidis p / Dick Morgan bj / Harry Goodman bb / Ray Bauduc d.

Ben Pollack & His Orchestra - Victor 21184 (1927)

Went after this one for W.C. Handy's Memphis Blues (Check out the site for Mr. Handy's Blues: A Musical Documentary) and got a surprise on the flipside (Waitin' For Katie)...an eighteen year old Benny Goodman on trumpet!

According to Jazz Oracle's Ben Pollack Volume 1's liner notes by John Wilby, Goodman gives the two bar introduction to Jimmy McPartland's cornet solo.
